Kandyache Thallipeeth

My 1st std class teacher: You look like a Tamilian.
Me: I am Marathi.

My 4th std Marathi teacher: How do you speak Marathi so well even after being a south Indian? Me: I am a Maharashtrian.

My 5th std English teacher: Aren't south Indians supposed to be good in English, what's wrong with you?
Me: I am from RSS, against westernization. Jai Hind.

My Bharatnatyam teacher: Your eyes are just like south Indians.
Me: What are my long hair like?

My south Indian friend's jealous non-south Indian girl friend: If you are not a south Indian, why do you put kajal in your eyes?
Me: Oh, I am trying to woo your boyfriend.

My nerd college mate: Man, I gotto keep an eye on you. You south Indians study real hard.
Me: Dude, your eyes are going to get sore, I am not a south Indian.

My colleague: Your Hindi is impeccable, first south Indian I have seen with such a nice Hindi.
Me: That means you haven't seen me at all, and I come from the capital of C.P. and Berar state.

My then bf and his stupid friends: We have a bet, he(my bf) says you are a typical Maratha, and we say that you are a Tamilian.
Me: $%#@$#@

And the list goes on and on.

"Looks can be deceptive", says Mr Bond (Die another Day). In my case they are south Indian. A bad joke, I know. But this 'looking south Indian' thing really made me weary of my looks. Once while I had cut my long hair to a sporty boy cut, my mom was the first one to comment that this is just one of my attempts to shade of my southie look. Can you beat that. And yes, for almost all through my college I had stopped putting kajal in my eyes, to the great dismay of my grandmother. But this I actually did to look more what I was. Kind of things people do for vanity...:P

I have that south Indian look in me and I cannot deny that. It does help sometimes when you have a south Indian boyfriend. They really were sold out on my looks.
It is okay, this to come from people who have seen me, but what about the cooking artist and chatkhor , they haven't seen me. Still they thought me to be a southie.

I thought this was it, the call for the 'Marathi Manus Jaga ho' within me is mandatory. Hence the assal(authentic) marathi kandyache thaliepeeth.
These are going to dear Valli's Roti Mela.

Recipe for Kandyache Thalipeeth

Ingredients:

1 cup wheat flour
1/2 cup gram flour
1/2 cup jowar/bajra flour
1 big onion chopped
4-5 green chilies, sliced and halved
1 tbs ginger garlic paste
1 tbs cumin seeds, ajwain, sesame seeds
1 tbs coriander powder, red chilli powder
1/2 tbs turmeric powder
2 tbs yogurt
salt to taste,
coriander sprigs
water for kneading the dough
2tbs oil + oil for frying the thalipeeth

Procedure:

In a big bowl, sieve all the flours together.
Mix the remaining ingredients along with 2 tbs oil, except water.
Add small amount of water at a time and mix the flour to form a chapati dough, soft and pliable. Take a lemon sized dough ball, flatten it, apply some dry wheat flour on both sides and roll it into a chapati.
Heat a girdle, spread 1/4 tbs of oil on it. Fry the chapati on the girdle from both sides. Apply more oil if required.
Makes 10 -12 thalipeeth.

Notes:

Try using other kinds of flour combination. I used what was available with me. Ragi flour or rice flour also viable combinations.

Well, today is the last day of our 15 day run. Believe me, it was sheer fun. I gathered lots of friends and hugs while running and wheezing. All credit to DK and Siri. So with teary eyes(due to sweat dripping all over) I introduce my fellow marathoners. Please give a big round of applause to

And Bhags, i guess ur name must b joining hands in looks, for u to b assumed southie! My name was always Pouuurrnima, as if i m the chandra, correcting to pronounce Purnima had no effect..my name was one of the reasons people assumed me 'Marathi'!

What I cannot understand is, why does it bother other people if one is a North-Indian or South-Indian? I feel so sick when the darker skinned people are assumed as being south-indian and categorised as being 'lowly'. Just frets me up!

Loved your kandyache thalipeeth.

ROTFL!!!
Aiyyoo, they always asked me, a pucca south Indian, whether I am a Goan or Gujarati!!! I look like a Coorgi but I am a Lingayat and I always had a Pge boy's hair cut until it's time for my wedding! ;D
My husband's skin color is creamish and he is a south Indian too. Where does all these stereo typical ideas stem from, my mind boggles!
Nice Thalipeeth. Yes, you are a pucca Maratha now! HeHe! You can send this to WBB#23 too.
Cooking from book or movie still on or is it one time thingie? Let me know.

That was really funny, Bhags. My mother and I are always mistaken for Malayalees even though we're Tamilians. My husband looks North Indian even though he's Tamilian, too. Go figure, huh? Thallipeeth looks delicious! :)

Your "southie" woes conversations were hilarious! But so true that we associate certain features with certain states/regions in India.

Loved reading your experience. I know it was not so funny for you, but very entertaining for me to read.

The thalipeeth looks good too. I have not used bajra flour so far in my cooking. Will definitely try this out.

I love thalipeeth too, and I must try my next batch with kanda. I have tried adding them before! I still undergo an identity crisis. Someone had the gall to tell me that I am after all not as haughty as I look! So I look haughty, Catholic, and unmarried(?)! I am completely with you, and I am Tamilian...ha ha:)

Sunshinemom said...

I was here to tell you that I have a cute looking award for you. Vandu edutukko please! (he..he..Come and get it!)
