‘It tastes the best when eaten with hands ' was my reply to a certain gentleman who asked me what is that makes us (Indians) eat our food with our hands.
Well to someone who has used all kinds of instruments which maneuver the food before one eats it, using hands to do so certainly seem as an old adage in this robotic world.
But I bet it really takes some part of one’s heart to be Indian in order to break a small part of chapatti, roti or naan with just two fingers and a thumb. Guess even robots would find it difficult to achieve this feat. And also please forgive the squeamishness, for I cannot help but mention slurping the rice flooded with daal and curry, to utmost satisfaction, with those fingers.
Indeed there is an alternative for everything. And so is one for the use of those two fingers and the thumb. Well the cooks are one of the most intelligent of their kind. And hence for those who were not too keen on dirtying their hands they invented kinds of the Burritos, the Quesadillas and yes, Calcutta Rolls, the only kind of affordable fast food we used to during my college days.
Well, ever tried doing this with your left hand. Fold a napkin loosely around the little finger. Hold a wine glass between the thumb and the index finger. And then try balancing a plate with the help of your ring finger and middle finger. The first job I had, they spent a day’s time in perfecting us in this act. Probably an easier task for the robots.
The way I make Quesadillas:
Base: Tortillas, can be replaced by chapatti (I usually use the left over one)
Fillings: Anything and everything can go in there.
- Left over Indian vegetable preparation
- Sautéed vegetables like cauliflower, green pepper, green onions, tomatoes
- Roasted vegetables or meat
Procedure
Heat an iron pan. Warm the tortilla on the pan. Spread a little oil on the tortilla on both sides while flipping.
Air is filled up in the tortilla and it rises, spread a generous amount of grated cheese on the tortilla, along with the vegetable or meat fillings.
Let the cheese melt on low heat. Cover the pan, if desired.
Once the cheese has melted, flip one side of the tortilla over another, the sides should have been browned by now.
Cut into wedges and serve with salsa
For the fillings I used sautéed mushrooms, cauliflower and green pepper with olives.
These Quesadillas are going to DK's A.W.E.D. Mexican

Hee! At home, fingers make for spoon n fork during meals..well we have a wash basin u c! ;) :D just kidding!
The dish looks yummy!
bhags..that looks great...and about eating with hands..there is nothing like digging into a pizza with hand!..:)
Bhags - That's so true about the fingers. I've seen people trying to mix rasam into rice with a fork - Crazy! - whats the point if you're not going to slurp the rasam off your fingers?! :D
Bha, Kathi rolls have the same concept as Burritos too, right?
Nothing tastes better than licking the finger after a yummy meal too! :D
Looks delicious, great entry for AWED!
How I love being in India and eating with my fingers. And yes, the food does taste better. I must be a little bit Indian (perhaps in a past life) because I can tear a piece of roti off using only two fingers and a thumb! I posted about eating off banana leaves (hope you don't mind me including the link) here.
Your post made me "homesick" for India.
You forgot to mention licking the fingers after we finish. And mixing dal/curd/gravy into rice with the whole palm, giving it a vigorous squeeze ... and licking the whole palm with extended tongue ... yuck or heaven, you choose!
Food does taste a whole lot better when eaten this way. I completely agree. :D
Oh, goodness! You totally made me crack up. I've had to defend this to even our fellow Indians since childhood! But, there is nothing like eating with your hands for Indian food to taste good! :)
lovely recipe bhags!!!nice entry too...
Nothing can beat the enjoyment of eating food with fingers! The Quesadillas look so delicious.
When I went out for lunch with my colleagues for the first time, I saw a few using the knife and fork for the pizza...!!! I was first shocked, cos until then pizza was the most informal meal we had at the Univ, and I had never ever imagined a knife n fork alongside it! And guess where we were...Pizza Hut !!!
You are so right. There is something v special eating food with one's fingers. I cant think of losing that habit wherever I stay! It gives utter satisfaction jus like how confort food does to us.
Your Quesadillas loook perfect. Love that pic. Makes me drool. Thanks for sending it to the event.
Typing on behalf of my daughter: the quesadillas look very yummy.
I agree with her!
BTW, weren't you in Pune?
Yes, no greater pleasure than eating with one's hands!!! And those Burritos look good.....
bhags did you see the seinfeld episode where george eats a mars bar with knife and fork? Hilarious! Different parts of the world have styles of eating. Nice quesadilla post.
Eating with hands... there really is nothing like it... But I don't think I can actually tear a roti with just two fingers and a thumb... :) Sometimes I have to use both my hands... hmmmm...
